Windstorm Season

Within a period of 5 weeks, 3 major storms hit UK headlines, each bringing with them weather warnings and destruction. Storm Erik made the news in February, swiftly followed by Storm Freya in early March and then Storm Gareth in hot pursuit, crashed over our shores in mid-March. Yellow weather warnings were issued and wind speeds were recorded of up to 94 mph.

There’s nothing like a good storm to bring home insurance to the forefront of homeowners’ minds. With mayhem literally in the air and the threat of flying debris, falling trees and heavy rainfall, many people are glad to have the peace of mind that comes with having good buildings insurance in place and none more so than home owners whose properties have flat roofs.

Flat roof home insurance and storm damage

Technically classed as non-standard, flat roofs require specialist insurance and a fair bit of TLC. Although not necessarily more susceptible to damage from high winds than other types of roof, flat roofs are subject to larger uplift forces than pitched roofs.

Add to this the fact that it can be difficult to spot if your flat roof has been slowly taking in water until it is significantly saturated, and it’s easy to see why some people can get nervous when it comes to high winds and flat roof home insurance.

Did you know that flat roofs aren’t flat at all?
Interestingly although they look flat, all flat roofs are built with a very slight gradient to aid drainage.

Why it’s vital to keep your flat roof in a good state of repair

If you have a flat roof and the necessary flat roof home insurance, it is still important to regularly check your roof and undertake any required maintenance. A good reason for this is that although storm damage will be covered by your building’s insurance, if your flat roof was found to be weakened due to being in a poor state of repair before the storm hit, then you could risk invalidating your claim.

Finding good flat roof home insurance

There are many variables involved in flat roofing, not least the quality of materials used, various rubbers and membranes that can extend the life of your flat roof and the age of the roof itself. Ideally you need an insurer who understands modern advances in flat roofing techniques, which specialises in non-standard home insurance and that can take these variables into account and tailor your policy accordingly.
